Site Upgrade

17th June 2006 @ 19:52

The JWG website is in the process of moving webhosts, (not by choice, sadly!), and each section is being moved/upgraded in turn. –> Done!
The main blog section is now functioning relatively correctly, but unfortunately the resources directory was unable to be moved in its current form, and needs a total re-install and upgrade using new software.–> Done!
JWG Tutorials can now all be accessed via their own index page on the blog, and the main site map.
I will of course be working tirelessly on restoring the links and resources directory as soon as possible.–> Done!
Thank you for your patience and understanding while areas of the site are inaccessible/broken.
Don’t you just love moving house???

:star: ::UPDATE:: :star:
I now believe that I have managed to restore all sections of JWG to their former glory, in our new home.
Please dont hesitate to email me, or add a comment here if you find anything still doesnt work as advertised.
Thanks again for bearing with me during this fraught time! :headbang:

More Free Software!

16th April 2006 @ 23:35

Are you a starving student? No?
Never mind, you can still take advantage of this great free CD, which contains a wide selection of free, open source applications for you to install on your pc. Apps include graphics, browsers, games, typing tutors, ftp and web development programs, and lots more besides. Many of these programs were originally developed for Linux, but this CD contains Windows or Mac versions.
You simply download the ISO (preferably using BitTorrent), and then burn image to CD.
Azureus is a popular BitTorrent client.

Further details and instructions are available on the download site:

Free Software Foundation

20th March 2006 @ 22:28

The Free Software Foundation (FSF), established in 1985, is dedicated to promoting computer users’ rights to use, study, copy, modify, and redistribute computer programs. The FSF promotes the development and use of free software, particularly the GNU operating system, used widely in its GNU/Linux variant.”

They also run the Free Software Directory, containing over 4000 free, software packages, many for use on Linux systems, although quite a few applications have a Windows version too - see below for a couple of examples.

(Free in this context is free as in beer or speech, with no licences or subscriptions to pay, and all with a completely clear conscience too! )

Interested in giving any of this a try? Continue reading »
