Geek-in-training

OK, so I have a confession to make. I am slowly turning into a wannabe geek. I am becoming more and more interested in the techie part of computing these days. :computer:
Just in case I am not the only one out there, I thought I would add a Techno category where I can post about my little adventures into geekdom. Please feel free to add comments, questions, corrections and assistance wherever you see fit. Ready to join me? (Dark rimmed glasses and woollen tank top optional  ). Away we go…

Tossing you are roll of white adhesive tape for the bridge on those glasses.

I would love to go back to school. Time, money, and children are my biggest obstacles at the moment.

I LOVE GEEKS! I WANNA BE A GEEK TOO!

Thank you Freda, that feels much better now…
    Our little band is growing….
There’s the two of us, Saphy’s boyfriend, who appears to be exhibiting geekie tendencies, and I think nikki has bought a tank top…

I am very lucky at the moment. :redheart: Due to our family circumstances, I have been able to go back to school, with the aim of getting a teaching job when I graduate. I already possess a teaching qualification (so that’s where my bossiness comes from!), and am now studying IT with a view to teaching that, rather than little darlings in infant/junior (elementary?) school. (Age 4 -11 basically, which is what I trained for, years ago). Having raised 4 of my own, I am now looking forward to mixing with more adult students.

You have done some playing with php and mysql havent you? I am starting to read about that and intend to get really stuck into it during the summer break. :type:

will keep you posted on successes and failures…. :cry2:

Me me …. me too! Love the geekdom. Of course, I will probably never know enough to be a big-time geek but I love being able to at least sit in on geeky conversations. :headbang: Plus the adventure of trying new things goes with being a geek & I love trying out new things.

You can count on me to be here now that my security issue is fixed. Jewel you will be an excellent teacher. You’re already a teacher here. I can’t wait till your summer break. I’ve started some tutorials on php & css. I did an easy one from your links tonight on css. ……onward & upward.

That’s the spirit, nikki. I love enthusiastic pupils….

I didn’t actually learn how to write php or cgi scripts. I did learn enough CSS that I could edit PHP files for my guestbook and forum.

I downloaded Apache and installed Perl, SQL, and PHP on my computer. I tried to use my computer to serve web pages but I found out that my ISP (MSN) is blocking port 80. I tried to figure out how to use another port but I hit a dead end.

I thought that Apache was making my computer run slow so I tried to turn it off but my computer was not acting like a happy camper.

Long story short … I dumped Apache and all the other stuff. My computer is running smooth.

My web pages and PSP have been on the shelf for several months. I have enjoyed reading tutorials on how to build a PC. On of these days! LOL

I am considering creating a new website … I would like to get away from the PSP arena. I did enjoy learning how to use an FTP client and how to extract tar files etc. It gave me a clearer picture of how the internet works. At the very least … I can read techie articles and I do not feel like a blind man gropping about in the dark.

I agree with Nikki. You are an excellent teacher. God Bless You in your plans to teach IT courses. I’m sure you are going to enjoy every minute.
