Fancy a quick blog?
I have added a new category to the JWG Links and Resources directory today, Open Source. This category contains links to software such as blogs, cms, and forums that you can install on your website.
(JWG uses theWordPress blogging software for the main site).
Open Source means the software is released free under the GNU General Public Licence, and that you are also free to make any modifications to the software that you wish. The catch? Well, there isnt one really. Many developers work on these projects in their own time, and feel they want to give their expertise freely to the community. Obviously if you are particularly taken with a piece of software, and want to show your appreciation, developers will generally welcome donations, or maybe a purchase from their Amazon Wish Lists, but this is purely voluntary.
CMS stands for Content Management Systems which are very similar to blogs, but may provide more flexibility and options for you to build your website upon them, rather than just having them as an add-on. If you are not sure which type you want, the best idea is to browse through the links in each section, and read up on the features offered to see which is most suitable for your needs. All of the Blogs and CMS in these sections require PHP/MySQL databases to run, with the exception of Movable Type with uses perl scripting instead. This is also NOT Open Source but does allow personal users a free version.
So, you pays your money (or not!) and you takes your choice…
